This text is an excellent resource and guide to understanding the social, emotional, and psychosocial development of individuals who are gifted. It provides a historical understanding of the current paradigms in the field of gifted education. While the book is integrally grounded in research, it is written in a way that is digestible for researchers and practitioners alike. For those who work and serve in the gifted community, this a must read and go to resource to better understand where we are, how we got here, and next steps for future research. Rinn has done the difficult job of threading the needle between fidelity to research and readability. This is not an easy task. Psychological research is a field that is always in flux changing and adjusting to societal changes that attenuate previous findings. Thus it can be difficult to be both true to a research base (such of that of social, emotional, and developmental psychology) that has few unequivocal conclusions beyond the importance of a balanced diet, exercise, and basic social and emotional support. There are areas where I would have been more critical of the research or not included at all, such as stereotype threat, Myers-Briggs, and level of emphases on personality types. However, this is my scholarly perspective and Rinn’s choices are equally valid. One of the highlights of the text is the organizational and orienting frameworks.
